Vandil Kusai
Description
Vandil Kusai does not stand like an imposing man. It's true that he stands with confidence and that his wiry form strides with a preternaturally fluid grace. There's just something about the man that steeps him in a mystery that few care to know. He exudes a sense of privacy that turns to malice when invaded. Normally, a cloak once midnight black but weather worn to dark-brown, cascades around his body. When Vandil’s smooth steps ensue, the fact that studded armor of sheer leather protects his body is bared. Buckled at his belt and girdle are numerous pouches and not one sharp, sheathed sword or knife. Of course, his arsenal is already noted by the bow and quiver, and more disturbingly the hooded scythe, strapped across his back. Typically, Vandil keeps the cowl of his cloak over his head. It’s not that he's scarred or homely. In fact, his youthful, sculpted features and rich, short-trimmed black hair are handsome – diabolically so. This image was further enriched by evidence he clearly wishes to conceal: a pair of short, black horns protrude from his brow. His tiefling heritage cannot be denied, giving him little to ever smile about. And that is why Vandil Kusai wears his cloak’s hood up high, masking those features. But he could do nothing to hide his eyes: black within black. From the shadows of the cowl, they glimmer out with keen attention and an insatiable hunger for knowledge, power, blood, and glory. One thing is obvious: he is not a man with which to trifle.
History
Forty-one years hence, Vandil Kusai was born to two tieflings who were drawn together by the curse they shared. They hid well in a distant cabin far from civilization and tried to live a content life. Vandil was raised here for some time, his demonic curse at least loaning him longevity. A group of brigands came across the home and razed it to the ground, slaughtering or driving away Vandil’s parents – he wasn’t sure which. All he knew was that they took him captive, as a freak to sell to some slave market in the city where they were heading. And thus began Vandil’s new, darker life. He was in fact sold to an aspiring guildmaster of thieves and killers. The guildmaster took the tiefling into his care, training him in the ways of skullduggery like only a master could. Vandil had no choice but to learn. Surrounded by misery, poverty, and evil, Vandil even came to enjoy it…and despise most people. In time, his training was complete. Vandil was dispatched on his first mission, its completion signifying his freedom from slavery – provided he stayed loyal to the guild. Vandil wouldn’t mind the indentured service expected of him, so long as he could get out and see the world, and carve out of that world a piece of happiness for himself.
Personality
Vandil wants happiness, but he’s not sure he remembers what it is. It could bite him on the ass and he’d just turn around and put a dagger in its head. Of course, that may prove the irony of his cursed life: good things come to those ready to receive them. But he’s ready and expecting to receive only more misery, and more than eager to dispatch it as brutally as possible.
Goals
Vandil will follow the rogue class until 5th-level. At that time, he will take up the prestige class of assassin, mastering that. Once that class is mastered, he will return to the rogue class, following it to epic levels.
