Vail -- "Sinnilinn"

Description

Few dragons look as metallic as copper, and Vail's age and size epitomizes her race's powerful presence. She's a massive specimen, over 36 feet long from the tip of her segmented tail to the drake's back swept cheek ridges. She must weigh close to 10,000 pounds, and much of that is fantastically powerful muscles bound behind metal plate-like scales. The broad shoulders of her forelegs and her thick thighs ripple with obvious muscle and flex with sharp-clawed toes. The layered sheathes of her scales bear a reddish hue with the greenish tint of her age, and her whole body boasts a metallic shine honed by canyon winds. These are winds Vail flies on by a pair of great, expansive wings that look like mighty sails rising from shoulders and tapering off halfway down her supple tail. Always surrounding this copper dragon is a faint acrid odor mingled with pungent herbs. Vail's face is shorter as opposed to the longer, more crocodilian features many dragons possess. Frills that sweep forward slightly decorate the backs of her lower jaws, though a few appear to have been broken off over the years. Smooth brow plates jut over her eyes and long, flat horns extend back from these plates in a series of overlapping shades. Layers of triangular shivs point down from her chin, which is held high with a lofty wisdom and savvy. That ancient cunning reflects in those bright eyes of hers, which burn like orbs of liquid turquoise. Though Vail looks like an important dragon, the curve of her mouth tilts up, offering a rare and perpetual draconian smile. Powerful she may be, Vail at least knows the value of a good sense of humor. She hopes you do, too, because this next joke will kill you!

When Vail adopts a human disguise, she is known by her common name of Sinnilinn. In this form, she appears to be a healthy and shapely human woman in her mid to late 30s. She keeps soft copper-red hair that bobs about her head chin level. She's fair-skinned, lovely despite (or because of) her maturity, and she often bears a mischievous, all-knowing smirk. Sinnilinn walks in sandals and wears a rich burgundy robe complete with matching cloak, trimmed with mink fur. She wears numerous jewels, especially diamonds and turquoise and, of course, copper -- mostly rings, bangles, necklaces, amulets, braclets, and anklets. Attached to the belt around her waist are numerous pouches and a pair of sheathed daggers gilded with platinum and diamonds. In hand, Sinnilinn carries a staff with magic so powerful it radiates forth without much need for divination spells. The shaft is long and thick, clearly of oak, and etched with countless magical sigils. Atop the shaft is mounted perhaps the biggest diamond or corundum anyone may ever see, and it catches myriad sparkles in a fascinating fashion. Even so, that lingering scent of pungent herbs and acrid chemicals distracts from that marvelous staff. Is it her dragon breath or spell pouches or…or…both? The titillating glitter in her turquoise blue eyes begs you to dare and ask.

History

Vail hatched 1,146 years ago, becoming one of the oldest copper dragons alive. She was purposely bred by insightful parents who foresaw the coming strife of the so-called Goblin Wars. That conflict involved much more than goblins. In the skies above, out of sight of men and goblins, dragons of good and evil clashed, too. Vail was bred in the foothills of the Shivor Mountains of Western Elan so that about 100 years later, she would be ready to battle the chromatic dragons. For that first century of her life, she was encouraged to enjoy everything, to experience life and revel in the bounty of nature. And most of all, her parents made her laugh, laugh, laugh. It wasn't hard, since Vail (like all copper dragons), had a good sense of humor to begin. When the war came, Vail survived…one of the lucky ones. Many dragons fell in that conflict, young and old. Vail lost both her parents, in fact. It was good thing that in addition to all their favorite jokes and prank ideas, they passed onto Vail how to defend herself and how to hunt for food. Many copper dragons enjoyed the taste of scorpions; Vail preferred spiders, and the bigger the better.

So after the war, she spent a lot of time digging deeper into the earth in search of her favorite food. Vail also collected precious metals and gems and the occasional buried trove as she found it, hoarding it all to build an immense bed of draconian wealth in the hilly cave her parents once called home. She ran afoul of some foul things in the deep Lower Kingdom; some of them even tasted half-decent. Vail never did appreciate the taste of humanoids, however, and the few drow and duergar she munched on got spat right back out. Yuck. (Driders were okay, but needed a lot of salt.)

Although Vail spent centuries delving through the mountains and Lower Kingdom, her real interest came on the surface. Her magic developed greatly, enough that she could change forms. She adopted a human disguise and began to walk through the agricultural centers of human civilization. She especially enjoyed the spice crops humans made, and over the years purchased (and devoured with dinner) numerous spices from farmers. That was how she earned her common name of Sinnilinn (she really liked cinnamon). Spritely at heart, Vail always felt alive and active, rarely sleeping for very long. She was attuned to the planet, her magic keeping her intuitively alert to the changes in the earth. That was why, when she felt rumblings to the far south, Vail decided to go and investigate. Though she would be traveling far from home and into hostile territory, she was confident. Vail was confident her sharp wit would help her avoid or escape from any battles, because that was mainly what she intended to do once she found out what was making the earth tremble!

Personality

Vail is a good-natured dragon armed with a barbed wit and a keen eye. She seems to know no shame, encouraging flight before fight. But she's far from a coward. She's just had the centuries of first-hand experience to know when a battle is truly worth fighting. Indeed, her jovial demeanor masks the intensity, confidence, unshakable purpose, and erudite genius that defines every action she takes and every word she speaks. When she speaks, it seems that she could be telling a bald-faced lie and still be true wisdom, and thus worth taking to heart.

Goals

Vail will take the sorcerer class to 10th level before taking up the Prestige Class of arcane trickster.
