Shotoi never met her real parents. She scavenged as a child for food in Coronet City on Corellia all her young life. Her eyes always to the stars, young Shotoi hoped for a better life beyond her homeless isolation. The "scumrat" learned early how to defend herself and how to watch out for (and escape from) trouble. Luckily, she never quite mastered how to pick pocket, because the first time she was caught was by a most forgiving gentleman -- Brennt Stormfall, visiting Corellia on business. The Nubian mechanic took pity on the ragamuffin and offered to adopt her. Suspicious at first, the promised of food and shelter and an authentic smile lured her in. Soon she was living on Nubia and going to school. She proved a bright girl, picking up basic reading and writing soon enough. Her foster sister Nycola gladly assisted. She showed an intuitive knack for understanding astrogation charts: a sure sign of her future as a starship captain.
But she didn't start as one. She had a humble beginning as a starship janitor working for Isonian Shipping & Transit. But soon Shotoi proved her worth. The freighter she worked on was attacked by pirates and boarded. The crew resisted, so the pirates began executing everyone. Shotoi rallied her cleaning crew and they attacked a group of pirates with cleaning tools. They took the pirates' blasters and retook the bridge. Shotoi then put her education and skills and, above all, a natural instinct nonpareil and piloted the craft with a jump to hyperspace that should have shook the craft to bits -- but she timed it just right so the pirates' cruiser took the brunt of the resonance instead (and was quite disabled).
She was given a small freighter by IST but the corporation abruptly dissolved after ties to the Sith Empire were discovered. Instead of turning her freighter in at Corellia's shipyards as the banks demanded, she kept on flying and shipping. Now she worked for herself. It was just called smuggling now. A routine trip to Ord Mantell ended up especially fateful and set her upon a glittering road through the starlit galaxy.
