Saul Kay
Description
An aging monk in his early 40s, the human Saul Kay has spent years battling devils within and without. The war has left its mark, turning his receding hairline iron gray a decade or two early. His round face, lightly tanned from the road, brings a grim and serious expression to bear. Cool, blue eyes scan the environment unshakably. Saul wears a loose gray robe bound by a brown cord over top the cloth wrappings of a warrior monk. The man moves with confident and fluid grace, proving to be a dauntless, unflinching, and wise force of truth. There is nothing conflicting or “mixed up” about his appearance. It is all purposeful and efficient. In short, Saul symbolizes simplicity.
History
In the Verdentian port of Abrasia, slavery was an acceptable institution. The Kay family, prosperous merchants, owned several. Saul never approved of it, however. It wasn’t that he disagreed with slavery, but the identities of the slaves never sat well. It should have been a punishment to be turned into a slave, and they were ordinary people kidnapped from their homeland across the Horizos Ocean. He shocked his parents when he discarded his heritage to join the clergy. Saul found inspiration from the teachings of the revered Nailor, a deified priest and pursuant of justice. Saul never became a full-fledged cleric, however. Instead, Saul trained for years at the local Nailor monastery, learning the ways of achieving justice and balance within and without.
For years after ordainment, Saul traveled the countryside alone or with his brethren. He battled villains and bandits. He especially distinguished himself fighting bands of orcs, giants, and dark cults that practiced human sacrifice. And after a decade of heroic self-sacrifice, the overall monk society, the Order of Abhinna, asked Saul to become one of their prized independent trainers. So at the age of 44, Saul was assigned his first student. He wasn’t sure how good of a trainer he would be, but Saul was resolved to do his best and start a new legacy of justice-seekers.
Personality
An introspective gentleman, Saul is quiet and serious. His ambition is only to achieve perfect balance within, an inner justice that could not be quenched. He has no tolerance for extreme beliefs good or evil. Despite his desire to maintain utter neutrality, Saul’s determination can make him willful and even disobedient at times. But this emerges only when he knows in his heart that something is wrong. Righteousness will prevail.
Goals
Saul will master the monk class and pursue it to epic levels (20th-level+) and beyond.
