Pyller -- "Sunbolt"

Description

Treasure hunter extraordinaire, Sunbolt himself glows like some sort of divine jewel. He's clad in a shirt of silvery chain links that are so fine and glossy that they seem perpetually drenched in the waters of the River Oceanus. Sunbolt carries a three-tined spear, commonly known as a trident, crafted from dark steel and tipped with shadowy mother-of-pearl. Tiny letters written in Aquan decorate the shaft. A small ring rests on his left hand, the diamond set in white gold a beautiful gift. Hanging on his back is a large sack made of some fine leather, which no doubt contains his current haul of booty. A slick-looking black cloak with a central tail of slightly longer length than the rest billows behind his manly stature. Sunbolt isn't particularly tall at 5'8", but he's packed with muscle and confidence. That self-assurance reflects in his youthful Apollonian features. Fair skin compliments bronze-burnished hair that sweeps across his face and a radiant if slightly rakish smile. Sunbolt's face seems crafted by a master artisan intent on capturing human perfection. Unfortunately, the artist couldn't hide the divine in such beauty. Sunbolt's eyes lack pupils, instead shining and roiling like miniature cooling suns of some distant world. That illumination lingers near his scalp, too. Too warm and soft to make out specific shapes, it would still appear that Sunbolt has a halo of some sort! But if he's divine, he must be a child of the ocean lords. The gently salted scent of fresh sea spray accompanies his every step.

Of course, that's just Pyller's human form. This half-celestial bronze dragon does more exploration and treasure seeking in his natural shape. His relative youth is noticeable in the drake's length: from beak-like snout to frilled tail, Pyller isn't quite even fifteen feet yet, and not even quite two tons. However, his strong and confident gait demonstrates a puissance unusual for his youth, no doubt a result of his divine heritage. That heritage makes itself known in the lingering glow of solar warmth around the horned crest of Pyller's majestic reptilian head. It can also be seen in the warmth of his gaze, which offer vibrant spring green coloration due to the mingling of natural green with divine gold. As holy as Pyller's parentage may be, he's still a dragon. It's evident in the rows of sharp teeth and razor claws on large webbed toes. His great wings seem almost like burnished foil wrap, but are strong and powerful gliding appendages that span nearly thirty feet. The frill on top of Pyller's head seems born from the same material and rises tall to sweep down the neck. It discontinues at his shoulders where the wings sprout, however, only to pick back up the length of his slender tail. Pyller's lizard-like body is sheathed in smooth, flat scales. This natural armor boasts a light-brown metallic cast with a soft glow emerging from the waterproof spaces between each scale. The bronze tone compliments his angelic heritage with gentle warmth that makes it hard to believe he could harm anyone. Once riled, however, the sky crackles with thunder and spear-like claws flex with destiny. Smelling of fresh sea spray, Sunbolt can approach as a crashing wave, like a tsunami determined to wash away the world's evil.

History

Pyller was conceived in the Heavenly City. His mother was a heroic bronze dragon who fought alongside a majestic solar angel for many years. When she knew she was pregnant, she left Celestia and returned to the material plane of Cael. She settled back into her home in the Neissl Hills, not far from the Kloud Mountains of Northeastern Hale. There she laid a single egg that was Pyller, who hatched in 824 AK. His mother saw to his upbringing for the first couple decades, making sure he learned all he needed to learn about surviving on his own. But coupled with his angelic merits, Pyller would prove quite self-capable. As he gradually matured, Pyller grew better acquainted with both his draconian gifts and celestial powers. His parents perhaps hoped he would learn to use those powers for the greatest good, and he had no intention otherwise. But Pyller didn't intend to become a frontline soldier in the wars against Hell and evil. He spent his days sunning on great plateaus overlooking Skymos Sea. He crooned to the heaven, learning how to turn his rocky bass voice into a deep and resonating sound that would reflect the ocean's deep melodies.

When Pyller learned how to turn into a young man, he began to practice the harp to compliment his singing talents. He ventured among other human and humanoid folk, like elves and halflings, disguised as one of their own. He took the alias of Sunbolt, deciding that aptly reflected his heritage. Sticking close to the coast always in his travels, Sunbolt heard tales of sunken treasure ships and pirate vessels in the choppy Skymos Sea. He decided to begin diving and exploring for these wrecks and forgotten hoards. His new life was not as heroic as his parents hoped for. It was his father who approached Pyller, coming to the young dragon in his dreams. He was encouraged to live his life as he chose, and not even Heaven would try to force him to change his mind. But his father did encourage him to seek a more noble purpose to his treasure seeking. Offering no suggestions further, Pyller was left with that decision. And decide he did! While traveling the land, Pyller would keep his ears open for word of lost relics of great good or evil. And while combing the sea for treasure, he would keep his eyes peeled for such powerful magic items. It would be most prudent to recover such valuable devices, Pyller knew, whether to turn the items of good against the hordes of evil…or to ferret away or even destroy the items of evil so the hordes could not use them. With his mission determined, Sunbolt fixated on the northern coast of Elan to find all the treasure he could and honor his noble parents.

Personality

Pyller is vibrant and excitable. He loves learning new secrets and pieces of forgotten lore, only because he loves following up on such clues with much exploration. Though Sunbolt prefers coastal ventures, he'll pursue any clues to their finale. He's aware that his immense celestial power offers great gifts to the world, and he's not afraid to make good use of them when the need is demanded. He really prefers to be alone, however, so it's unlikely he'll ever score a companion that would benefit consistently from his gifts. It's not that Sunbolt broods while alone. He just loves his own company and thoughts, perhaps due to their metaphysical complexity unusual for a dragon his age.

Goals

Sunbolt will follow the Bard class to mastery (20th level) before considering another class. He may choose Sorcerer to deepen his arcane knowledge, although Cleric would not be inconceivable depending on what kind of life he leads up to that point.
