Nadia

Description

Jaw-dropping in her compelling and glittering beauty, Nadia is a creature of envy and rare breeding. By all appearances, she is erinyes -- a fearsome devil of punishment and terror. Nadia has the swift, black-feathered wings, except the tips of each plume appear to have been dipped in molten gold, for that is their permanent stain. She commands a statuesque presence at 5'11" and 156 pounds of corded, whip-like muscles and dexterity. Nadia seems young and fair, boasting enticing curves that are typically scantily clad indeed in little more than loose, silk flaps of black cloth. However, her infernal features can detract from her allure. Her eyes are a baleful scarlet red as if constantly seeking malice, or an excuse to share some. Unlike the common erinyes, whose flesh is pale and perfect, Nadia's is tinged a radiant gold. It doesn't resemble painted flesh, perhaps due to the way that it reflects light and gives her body a sunny glow that probably irritates other baatezu.

Nadia seems to have few weapons or accouterments, packing all her common belongings in a sack while she openly carries a recurved long bow with a shaft tinged red and etched with Draconic symbols of power. Golden bracers are clasped about her wrists, similarly inscribed, while a long sword with a diamond-imbedded hilt is sheathed at her waist. While Nadia radiates a cruel and calculating voraciousness that suggests turning one's back on her is suicidal, there is something else strange about this fiend. There is an inherited sense of otherworldly patience lurking behind Nadia's wickedness, as if she were just looking for an excuse to change directions. But evil is dominant in this half-dragon devil's life: don't give her an excuse to prove it.

History

Nadia was the result of a very rare and unlikely mingling nearly 1,900 years past. Her mother was an erinyes and her father…a gold dragon. Despite the ethical opposition devil and dragon faced, the loophole was in the erinyes' life. This devil was sickened by the abuse and tyranny into which she was born and forced to endure. She recognized she could advance not through her own strength but by the grace of her superiors, who typically sought her kind out -- and promoted her kind -- only as concubines. Turning from that caste system made her willing to later endure the capture and constant lecturing from a powerful gold dragon that kept her from escaping by potent and binding magics. In time, she felt swayed by the dragon's wisdom and patience, and the dragon felt responsible and drawn to the erinyes. They joined with a quick and ill-fated romance. Nadia was the result but her parents were forever separated when her mother opted to retreat to a hidden crevice in Hell. She retreated to the Ebon Mountain of Avernus, where she thought she would be safe to raise her mixed-breeding daughter.

She thought wrong, though it took many years for that doom to come true. She was found out by other baatezu, captured, and dragged to the deepest pits of hell to be subjected to all sorts of torments for her treasonous behavior. Nadia had matured by then and did nothing to stop the other baatezu from hauling away her mother. Clearly, Nadia leaned towards her infernal nature enough that she was spared her mother's fate -- albeit with a valediction. They reminded her to never abandon her duties and place. Such selfish behavior was a sign of the paltry tanar'ri or mercenary yugoloths, not a ranking devil of the baatezu armies. This was a warning she took to heart for as long as she could tolerate.

For centuries, Nadia suffered under the yoke of the other devils' disdain for her impure heritage, despite the dark nobility and strength it availed her. She suffered quietly, demonstrating that much wisdom inherited from her father at least. The oppression she felt only fed her resolution, however. Nadia took it all into her soul and let it make her stronger, fiercer, and more self-reliant. When the opportunity finally arose, Nadia slipped right out Avernus, out of Baator, out of the Outer Planes altogether. She stole through a gate of some unwary wizard's design and flew to freedom, finding herself in Elk Grove of Central Verdentia. Now that she was at least temporarily free, Nadia looked forward to giving into her own desires and gathering all the wealth and power that she could. If the baatezu were going to come to "collect" her as they had her mother, they would find a far stiffer fight on their hands. Yet once more, despite Nadia's affinity for wickedness, she was walking her mother's footsteps. By turning her back on Hell, she was instead facing Heaven. She just chose to ignore the holy glow of it all…so far.

Personality

Nadia is unbound and loving her freedom, although not in a nonsensical fashion as those ridiculous tanar'ri do. She simply believes in circumventing the entire caste system of the baatezu. She wants to amass enough personal power and influence to become an archdevil in her own right. Her schemes are flawed by her conflicting draconian blood, however, insuring that when some tyrannical opportunities appear, she will hesitate occasionally. This is a hole in her iron-clad code of baatezu honor that someone clever and wise could exploit, although that would take time -- months or even years of persuasion, as with her mother.

Goals

Nadia follows the rogue class due to her treacherous and back-stabbing inclinations as well as her self-reliant and survival-minded methodologies. She will obtain at least 5th level in the rogue class before taking up a Prestige Class, likely shadowdancer.
