Grul Crushstone

Description

All hail the king! His Majesty King Grul Crushstone…hardly looks the part. For one, he is a massive ogre, over ten feet tall and 600 pounds or more. Grul is also every bit as fat and ugly as an ogre his size would be expected. Shaggy dark-brown and black hair tumbles down over the yellow-brown skin of his flaccid flesh. Despite his bulging belly, Grul’s limbs ripple with corded muscle. Furthermore, his thick double chin is held up high. Beady black eyes peer out without the typical dullness of most of his kind. Indeed, he seems almost…intelligent. Perhaps Grul is an ogre mage masquerading as a normal ogre, or…or…some sort of mutant aberration. Gods help us if he’s the first of a new strain of ogre! Grul’s dignity is further kept up with a heavy (if smelly) leather harness. If expecting battle, the king would instead be found wearing a heavy breastplate and accompanying chain mail, and a finely forged greataxe in meaty hand. Surprisingly, Grul does not stink too badly as ogres go. Perhaps as king, he feels compelled to take an occasional bath.

History

Grul Crushstone always lived as a leader. Though now only 20 years old, that was closer to 30 in human years. Grul grew up with other ogres in his tribe in the Wildlands of Darsix that bordered Verdentia. Such boundaries meant little to ogres, of course. From youth, he was able to bully, cajole, and beat his peers into submission. They acted as a rare cohesive fighting force, enabling feats of brigantry that the veteran ogres did not dare. He began to earn the respect of them as well, especially when attempts to discipline the young bruiser failed spectacularly.

During one act of raiding, a golden crown was among the booty. The humans weren’t royalty, but rather were transporting a reliquary crown intended for display (thus its over-sized dimensions). Grul kept the crown, began to wear it, and started to call himself king. But until he and his tribe seized the old Malleuid fort in the Stoker Flats, an ancient (and rusting) iron citadel known to the ogres as the Block, he was not called king by many others. However, the act of clearing the Block out of vermin (and not a few undead) earned him that respect from his tribe. Soon, his tribe was joined by others seeking the enviable shelter of the Block. Sure, his leadership was challenged…and always failed miserably. Grul was king, and he claimed all the Flats as his domain. None yet dared challenge successfully, and he began to make tribute demands of neighboring provinces. Now things would get interesting…

Personality

Grul is domineering, clever, and cruel to all who would dare challenge his mighty rule. There is still much to be desired of Grul before he can truly be called a king. At this point, he’s little more than a local warlord. But he’s confident and aggressive, eager to meet any and all obstacles. In return, he might actually prove a viable ruler. He already understands the simple concept of reciprocity, something most ogres do not and could not comprehend. But they are pleased their leader does, and he will keep that up in his pursuit of full recognition.

Goals

Grul may be as smart as an ogre mage, but he has no interest or inclination for magical arts. He will only train as a fighter and take it to epic levels (20th-level+).
