Arius, the Whip
Description
Terrifying and daunting, Arius the Whip comes across at first like a stalking spectre. Has he come for revenge? Is he a revenant hell-bent on vindication? The truth is far worse. Arius is a kyton, a devil wrapped head to toe in loose and animate chains of heavy berth and infinite-seeming length. Under those black iron chains, a tall man-like form stands 6'2". With the chains, he seems to weigh over 300 pounds. Powerfully developed muscles ripple under Arius' metal attire. He lacks all hair (which probably helps him avoid getting any pinched in the chains!). But really, all one can see besides an outline of this baatezu's humanoid form are those eerie red eyes filled with malevolence. This daunting stalker advances with relentless, preternatural fluidity. Flight is the wisest plan.
History
Almost 3,000 years ago, a new breed of baatezu were born into Hell -- the Kytons. Arius the Whip was one of these first chain devils to be spawned from the infernal joining of erinyes and fiendish necromancers. The kytons were to be the bringers of fear and pain to the enemies of the baatezu. Arius was one of the best. Over the centuries, he honed his skills on demonkind and mortals alike. For a kyton, Arius also proved to be an exceptionally shrewd and cunning example. Unfortunately, he could not avoid enslavement (indentured service, as it was called) by the dark lord, Dispater. Dispater wanted to learn the secrets of the creation of kytons. For centuries more, Arius' talents were not employed properly. Instead, he was forced to languish in the bastion of Nale there in Baator, undergoing various tests. But eventually, Arius struck a deal with Dispater. In exchange for leading a legion of kytons in the future, Arius would be released from all other forms of indentured service. Furthermore, he was required to travel to Cael and help the humans of Praetoria extend their empire. Arius happily agreed. Once more free, he yearned to taste these liberties. He allowed a young diabolist to summon him -- one too weak to control him. Arius entered the material plane and looked forward to wreaking havoc and sowing the seeds of terror once again.
Personality
Arius the Whip was so named for his relentless and merciless cruelty when it came to driving his infernal duties home. He can be quite vicious and even perverted when he wants to be. The ancient kyton is more than just a mindless bully, however. He is shrewd and domineering, intent on being the manipulative leader in all things. He exudes an aura of pure evil and terror and pursues those concepts with admirable but frightening tenacity.
Goals
Arius will just pursue the Ranger class to mastery (20th level). He may eventually take up the Assassin prestige class, too.
